Your Initial Visit
The new patient visit is currently done via ‘TeleHealth’ (over video) and lasts approximately 60-90 minutes.
PART 1: Listening to you
The first part of the new patient visit is focused on listening to you. In our many years of working with adults with ADHD, we've found that patients are typically very frustrated by the daily symptoms of this condition, and how those symptoms are negatively impacting their life. This information is powerful: when we know what your primary symptoms are, we can match you with a medication and dosage to best control those symptoms.
During your new patient appointment your provider will determine though physical manifestation or answers you provide to specific questions, whether they feel you could be suffering from another more serious mental health disorder. If that happens, your provider will require you to seek treatment with a mental health specialist to rule this possibility out before we begin your treatment for Adult ADHD.
Our goal has been the same from the first day we began treating patients -- to best control your symptoms of ADHD without otherwise endangering your health.
PART 2: ADHD Education
The second part of the new patient visit is focused on educating you about Adult ADHD. At Millennium Medical Associates, we believe that education is empowering for our patients. Oftentimes, patients may come to their first visit feeling like a "loser who can’t accomplish anything" (in their own words, not ours). With appropriate education about their condition, our patients leave that first visit with the understanding that they are not a loser, but a person suffering from a medical condition that can be greatly improved with proper treatment and support.
During this education phase, we'll discuss important research findings about ADHD, including recent longitudinal studies showing that ADHD is a lifelong condition for the vast majority of individuals. Contrary to the long-held belief that 50% of children outgrow ADHD, research now shows that approximately 90% of children with ADHD continue to experience symptoms into young adulthood, with only 9.1% achieving sustained remission. While symptoms may fluctuate over time with periods of improvement and recurrence, understanding that ADHD is typically a chronic condition helps patients develop realistic expectations about long-term symptom management and the importance of ongoing treatment strategies.
PART 3: Medications
The third part of the new patient visit is focused on educating you about medications used to treat Adult ADD (what they are and how they work to reduce the symptoms commonly associated with this condition). Your physician or nurse practitioner will select a medication and dosage that is most likely to be beneficial for you. We’ll teach you how and when to take the medication. We’ll also counsel you about the safety and typical side-effects associated with the medication, including any temporary initial side-effects to expect when you first begin taking it.
PART 4: Patient Protocol
The last part of the new patient visit is focused on educating you about our patient protocol. Specifically, you’ll learn how to request medication refills of your medication, and what to do if you experience initial side-effects, along with other topics.
